You may know these chipper little parrots as parakeets, but they're really called Budgerigars, or Budgies! But that's not the fun fact. When you go to a pet store and see the Budgie cage, packed full of colorful birds, you aren't seeing what lives in the wild. Budgies in Australia, their native home, are only green and yellow! Blue budgies and budgies of any color except Yellow-green are mutations that occurred in captivity! Basically, pet budgies that were bred had chicks that were new colors, never seen before. So next time you see a budgie, see if it's the color of its wild ancestors, or of the colorful pet Budgies! -Rose
