We received this great observation yesterday from Cameron, age 13:
I saw a female and male cardinal on my backyard fence just recently. The female was a bit paler due to her camouflaging instinct to hide from predators when caring for her young. They were very beautiful! Cardinals are one of my favorite birds, Cameron! And, just to let you know, the female, by adapting, received her plumage. Of course, she also has the instinct to camouflage her nest, so you are mostly right about camouflaging! I'm glad that you got to see this beautiful pair!
